Subject: [*] AppleTalkOn
Here is the companion to my ToggleAT FKEY which is called simply AppleTalkOn.
This is an application extension (of type 'appe') which simply idles until
told to quit. Then it turns AppleTalk on. This way AppleTalk is always
loaded into memory. This is necessary because since TuneUp, AppleTalk will
not even load into memory if it is off at boot time. Some people dislike
this "feature" so I wrote this program to fix it.
One other thing AppleTalkOn does is remember the state of AppleTalk just
before it turns it back on (when it quits). That way, when the machine
restarts, it can turn AppleTalk back off if it was off when you restarted.
This means that functionally AppleTalkOn merely keeps AppleTalk loaded into
memory.
If you like this, feel free to send money, praise and comments.

Subject: [*] DLViewer 1.0b3
Finally, a DL-style animation viewer for the Macintosh.
Enclosed is a StuffIt! archive containing a Macintosh application which will
allow Mac users to view DL-style animation files. This program handles both
Version 1 and 2 file types, and handles format 0 (large, 320x200), 1 (medium,
160x100) and 2 (small, 80x50) animations.
DLViewer 1.0b3 is my first cut at providing an animation viewer for various
non-Macintosh animation files. It does not use QuickTime(tm) so it should
work on any Macintosh that can support 256 (8-bit) color. It does require
System 6.0.2 or beyond and Color QuickDraw 1.2. 1.0b3 fixes some
initialization problems found during initial beta testing. DLViewer was
compiled to take advantage of MC68020 and above instructions and addressing
modes, so it cannot be run on Macintoshes with 68000 processors (Plus, SE,
etc.).
The animation images are all read into memory for maximum display speed. This
implies of course that for large animation files an equivalently large amount
of memory is used.
In addition to the animation itself, I have also provided the ability for
smaller images to be "zoomed" (160x100 -> 320x200; 80x50 -> 160x100 _and_
320x200). The 80x50 images look very pixelated when zoomed up to 320x200, as
you might expect. Up to 10 DL files can be opened (but not run!)
concurrently. The real constraint will more likely be how much memory you
allocate to the viewer to run.
Finally, since DL animations do not have a built-in frame rate the frame rate
for each animation can be individually specified and adjusted.
Thanks to Mark Podlipec who wrote XANIM, an X-Windows animation viewer. His
sources provided the insights and clues to decipher all the formats that DL
files use.

Subject: [*] LineShare scripts for SupraFaxModems
This set of LineShare scripts allows you to support SupraFaxModems
(up to V32bis) with the LineShare 1.2b software - so you can receive
faxes, ARA/Hermes/TeleFinder/QuickaMail or other data calls using
the same device. And you can make outgoing calls when your
BBS/Mail/FAX is waiting for incoming calls.
Please note, that all scripts are called Supra Fax2&xxxx. It means
that your fax software should work with your Supra modem employing Fax
Class 2 commands (FaxSTF defaults to Class 1 for Supra).
Also note that only firmware version "H" (or later) really supports
incoming call type detection. You can check this with the "ATI3"
command - the modem answers with "V1.200-X", where "X" is the firmware
version. If your modem has an older firmware version, modem will
answer as FAX to all incoming calls. Ask Supra for free ROM upgrade -
explaining them the reason.
The ARA/LineShare file is attached again - the 12000 bps was missed in
the previous one.
P.S. "EXAR" scripts where tested with GVC modems - and they seem to
work...
Vladimir.

THE PROGRAM
Coloring Book is a full screen electronic coloring book for children of all
ages. The
user clicks on a palette of colors to select a color and then clicks inside
the shapes to
be colored. A random selection from a variety y of amusing sounds is played
every
time the color is changed. Interspersed throughout the coloring book pages are
simple
animations such as a fish that blows bubbles, a pop-up jack-in-the-box, a
space ship
that fires beams of energy, and others. There are 16 pages to be colored
including
such things as a birthday cake, cars, flowers, space things, snow man, fish,
and many
others; there is even a set of mosaic tiles which can be used to create any
picture or
design a child might imagine. Coloring Book was designed to be FUN for young
children to use. No menus are used. Pages are turned by clicking on large
forward
and back arrow buttons. This is a great eye-hand coordination developer. My
just-
turned-three-year-old sits by himself for 45 mins at a time playing with the
program. It's
been kid-tested with children up to 7 years of age. They all seem to enjoy
it!
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Coloring Book will run on system 6.07 or better. It has been tested on system
7.1.
Coloring Book requires a 256 color monitor of 13" or larger. Coloring Book
needs
1600 K of RAM to run. Problems will be encountered if insufficient RAM is
available.
Coloring Book is a large program over 900K in size when uncompressed.
If there is enough interest I will modify the program to run on 12"RGB
monitors.
Enjoy
James F. Allison.

Icons are controlled by a file attribute known as the bundle bit.
Save-A-Bndl can sometimes help when a file loses its icon. Here's
the blurb by the author:
Save A BNDL 1.3 - Michael S. Engber (engber@ils.nwu.edu)
Save A BNDL is a freeware utility for installing a file's BNDL
info (icon, ...) into the desktop database without requiring
rebuilding the desktop or rebooting. It requires System 7.
Version 1.3 fixes a with remotely mounted volumes (v1.2 failed
if any remote volumes were mounted when it was run)
Cheers!
BTW, it's got a GREAT icon! ;-)

Subject: 14Mb RAM on PB160 (Q)
I purchased a PB 160 4/120 in December, and have struggled since then
to get a 10Mb memory upgrade for it. The first board, from Viking,
was *way* too thick, leaving quite a gap between the case halves near
the battery. The resultant flexing of the case caused the system to
wake spontaneously from sleep, or to crash if jarred while operating.
Subsequent upgrades fit better, but the case still isn't flush, as it
is when no memory board is installed. I currently have an H-Co
board, recommended by Apple, with some gap but no problems yet.
Am I 1) the only person on the planet who has a 14Mb PB160, 2) the
victim of poor engineering or QC by memory board makers, or 3) just
overly picky? I know it isn't just my PB, as the dealer replaced it
in an attempt to fix the problem. Has anyone else experienced (and
hopefully overcome) these problems? (At this point, I'd be willing to
pay *Apple* prices for a reliable solution, but they don't make 10Mb
boards.)

Another (apparent) guilty party is the field of Mac program abandonment
is Fox (now owned by MicroSoft). FoxPro/Mac 2.0 was SUPPOSED to be released
in the 1st quarter of 1991; I saw the beta at the 1990 Fox Developers'
Conference, and it looked RGN (real good now) and was happy it was going
to be released RSN,T (real soon now, then). I know many people that work
in cross-platform environments, and that's what made Fox a great system
to work with (well, one of the reasons). IMHO, MicroSoft is cutting their
own throats by not continuing development on their Mac product. Now they're
introducing FoxPro 2.5 for DOS and Windows (ooooooooww, I used a couple
of dirty words!! :-), but still no word on FoxPro/Mac 2.ANYTHING from
that great vapor palace in the sky!

I can not help suspecting that a large percentage of the people
who are most fascinated by the possibility that they can compress
files are also the people who are most oriented towards being
highly structured in their file (paper of electronic) management.
Just as some people are so concerned about being "organized" that
they spend too little time doing real work, I know that many people
compress 100-200K files before sending them to the service buerau.
Often the time spent "stuffing" these files takes more time that the
time saved in modeming time. Also all-too-frequent are people who
"stuff" autodoubled files without thought to what, if anything, they
are accomplishing. I would not be surprised if Jeff's desk and hard
drive are as messy as mine. While it is obvious what problems going
too far in that extreme towards minimizing sorting our desks, etc.,
one must not lose sight of the fact that too much time and effort
sorting papers defeats the value of having the papers in the first
place. Similarly, too much time and effort spent on compression
can be self-defeating when taken to extremes.-Pete Tamas

prepare to win the last war - Apple should be worrying more about the
'war against the 586', and making their so-called 'power-user' machines
more price+performance competitive.

Try mac.archive.umich.edu's file:
/system.extensions/da/windowgrabber.cpt.hqx
which looks for windows not within screen confines and lets you grab and
resize them.
Dan also wonders about a utility for searching multiple text files for
string matches. Try BBEdit at the same site, filed as:
/util/editor/bbedit2.2.sit.hqx
It has a very nice multifile search method, with grep searches an option.
Read the manual chapter on searching, since some of the options (and one
Easter Egg) are not obvious. [Gosh--I've admitted to reading the manual.
Forgive me.]

Subject: Binhex or not Binhex
My suggestion to the BinHex vs. non-Binhex debate is:
Store stuff in MacBinary format.
People using ftp-by-mail can specify uuencoding, and get their problems solved
that way. No big deal.
Implement the version of ftpd that wuarchive.wustl.edu runs, and make it
support HQX too. This will solve the problem for people who can not
download in binary format. Currently this daemon works so that if there
is a compressed file xxxx.Z, then you can do get xxxx and you will get
a decompressed file. It also works the other way around. So modifying
it to support .hqx should be easy.
There are 2 reasons I prefer the files being stored in binary format:
uses less space,
and people who uses Fetch, XFerIt etc. can not specify other names
when using the graphical user interface. Peoplew who can NOT download
binary files has a stupid line oriented interface where they can easily
append .hqx to filenames.
I might look into fixing ftpd, but other volunteers welcome.

Here we go again - which part is broken this time?
System: Quadra 700, Apple Portrait Display, Extended Keyboard. System 7.1.
Symptom: the power-on key in the keyboard (3 years old) seems dead: when
I come in in hte mroning a press it, absolutely nothing happens.
However, the following ritual *always* solves the problem: switch off the
monitor, pull out the power cable from the 700 and the power cable that
goes from the 700 to the monitor, plug the 700's power cable directly into
the monitor. Switch on the monitor. Switch off the monitor. Put the cables
back in their usual configuration. Press the start-up key on the keyboard,
and voila, all is well.
Can anyone think of a hardware problem affecting either the 700 or the
monitor which the brief supply of power to the monitor along with the
plugging and unplugging of cables might be fixing? Plugging and unplugging
cables by itself doesn't do it - powering the monitor up and down is
also necessary.
Thanks for any insights.

Subject: Errors 1, 2 / problem with MacScheme
What are some possible causes of error IDs 1 and 2 (other than
extension conflicts and general system incompatibility)?
I'm having a somewhat confusing problem with MacScheme 4.0 (the
latest version). The problem is simply that when I try to launch it,
it abruptly quits with either an error ID 2 (address error) or ID 1
(bus error). The confusing part is that this problem seems to occur
at "random" - that is, I'll get it to launch fine, but at some
indeterminate period of time later, the problem will crop up again.
None of the other programs being used exhibits this problem.
Once this starts occuring, it happens whether I boot with System 6.0.7,
System 7.0.1 + TuneUp 1.1.1, with or without extensions enabled, etc.
(all in 24-bit mode - even though 32-bit compatibility shouldn't be
a problem with this version according to the company).
I can get it to launch properly again by doing various things - i.e.
running Norton Utilities 2.0 (which finds no problems), Apple's
Disk First Aid (which finds no problem), MacTools 2.0 (finding no
problems), re-building the desktop, etc. -- that is, different
combinations of things, including re-booting several times,
tends to temporarily make the problem go away. I can't seem
to find any discernable pattern of what causes the problem or
what solves it.
There doesn't appear to be any problem while actually using the
program (i.e. once it successfully launches).
Does anyone have any ideas?

WHERE DID MY ICONS GO? (11.10)
Your icons have passed on to a better place, but with a little
magic it's normally possible to resurrect them. Several utilities
including Norton Utilities for the Mac and the freeware drag-and-drop
utility Save-A-BNDL should retrieve your icons. Rebuilding the

should also restore your icons.

Howdy,
I read some answers regarding the Hard Drive nameing ,
in the MAC bulletin.
Unfortunately the old way of H.D nameing under system 6.X won't
work under system 7.0.1.If you have system 7.0.1 installed
You may want to boot from the floppy on 6.0.7 and then
rename the hard drive, but that won't work either (Actually ypu can rename
the disk , but when you reboot from the H.D the system 7.0.1 kernel will
bomb sooner or later!) .
What I found out is in order to rename the hard drive under
system 7.0.1 you need to :
1.Make a full backup from the H.D
2. Boot from the floppy under 6.X
3. Rename the drive and reformat it.
4. put the Backup back on the H.D
I am wondering if other people have had same
experiences or not ?

Luck sometimes allows you to survive very near misses. You can tell it
worked when you hear a voice say "sweet". I've had it when being grazed by
a rock, or when late with getting my shield up. I used to think it related
to keeping your other bonus weapons through a death, which happens
sometimes, but apparently that is just a fortunate bug.

Subject: Mac IIci won't boot and randomly crash
Hi netters !
Since I bought a Mac IIci one month ago I have had startup problems
and seemingly random crashes. The technician at my Apple dealer
could not find anything but suggested that some of my INITs where
rather old and/or obscure. But shift-booting (disabling all
extensions) did cure nothing as did a fresh install of the system.
Sometimes the monitor won't display anything at startup but I can
hear the Mac boot quite normally and the front light of the monitor
says it still gets power; sometimes it will turn off in the middle
of some computation (but the front light still says it gets power).
Sometimes I get sad mac error codes (always "0000000F" and "00000001")
which my table says means "Reserved for future Macintosh compatibility."
Now, a Mac that won't boot is certainly compatible to nothing :-)
Turning 32Bit adressing off doesn't help. The hard disk was
formatted using SilverLining, could that make a difference ?
The system : Mac IIci, 20MB, System 7.1, 8*24 video card,
Apple 16" monitor, TelePort FullFax modem
Has anyone any clues what might go on here or what the technician and I
could try ? Any help is appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
Greetings
Ulf

Did anyone happen to see this hour and half show last Thursday morn (1/28
10:30am PST). What I do not understand, is that they played this on a
satellite station (who the hex has a satellite), why not cable (like on the
learning channel or something). And why during working hours when, of course,
we have to be at work. And to top it off, I could not find any article about
this showing in any magazine (macweek, macworld, or macuser). Oh, it was
mentioned in the "Apple User group Connection" on compuserve, but they didn't
even say when, what time or even where to find it on the satellite. I hope
someone from Apple is reading this because I really wanted to watch this
show.
Now there is no way for me to see it. It would probably be illegal for
someone
to mail me a video they made, way-way to big for a quicktime, and the
technology would probably be out of date if I mailed Apple and requested them
to send me a copy (of course they'll charge me) and I would probablt get
laughed at. My last statement is ..."Come'on Apple. If your going to spend
the time and money to make a show like this (probably funded from your
outragous Mactcp prices), your going to have to make it possible for an
everyday-Joe to view it".

Subject: Nasty System Error (Q)
Good morning. Hope everyone had a good weekend and enjoyed the game. I'm
glad Dallas won, but I was too busy screaming at my computer to pay much
attention...I'm hoping someone can help me out as you frequently have
in the past.
My system at home is a Plus, 4megs RAM, Apple 20meg serial HD, running
system 6.0.8. I'm using ATM and a handful of other inits, all of which
have been in use for some time and caused no problems.(ATM is, however,
a recent upgrade to 3.0.). There are a *lot* of fonts loaded, both PS
and TT. I'm printing to an HP Deskwriter, using HP's driver version 3.1.
I created a very fancy (many fonts and manipulations) Canvas 2.1 document
that looked fine on screen, and sent it to the printer. The computer hung up
for a long time, then crashed with the scary system error message:
Stack Collision With Heap
In looking through my somewhat basic Mac reference works, I was unable to
find anything about this, either what it means or what caused it.
The problems snowballed from there. I trashed and reinstalled Canvas,
didn't help, the computer still crashed randomly with various error
messages. I finally did the same for the system, and everything *seems*
(knock on wood) to be all right again now.
Can anyone tell me what 'stack collision with heap' means? What did I
do to cause it? Is a system reinstall enough to fix it, or should I
reformat the disk?
I'm very grateful for any and all help/info/suggestions (even from
Buffalos fans ;)). Thanks very much,
Pat

I can't make heads or tails out of it but here goes anyway:
The LaserwriterSelect 300 has a five-page per minue Fuji/Xerox
engine, 300dpi, FinePrint, optional PhotoGrade, optional Postscript
and 512K RAM, with 1MB and 4MB upgrades. It has a high-speed RS-422
serial interface (rated at 909K). It includes 39 TrueType fonts,
includes the bulk of the Laserwriter 35 set and Geneva, New York,
Chicago. It has a 250-sheet feeder and a manual feed tray with
optional 250 or 500-sheet feeder and optional 50-sheet multipurpose
tray [which can hold five envelopes]. The printer ships with
GrayShare, Apple's share-it-with-software that's packed with the
Stylewriter II and the Apple Color Printer. It has some sort of ASIC
on it's logic board but no microprocessor, per se.
The Laserwriter Select 310 has an AM29025 RISC chip, 1.5MB or RAM,
expandable to 5.5MB. It has a parallel port and a serial port. It
has the same engine as the 300 as well as the same paper trays. It
has on-board Postscript with Courier, Times, Helevica and Symbol. It
does not seem to include GrayShare, does not seem to have FinePrint,
nor PhotoGrade. It seems to have Postscript Level 1 and nothing
else. No Localtalk, either.
A Laserwriter 300 with the Postscript option does not seem to become
a 310, but it's totally unclear what the relation is between these
two printers [based on my sketchy info]. More as I learn it...

Since you have a few 7.x Macs on your network, you should have AT LEAST
the same basic printer drivers on all Macs on your network, regardless
if they're System 6 Macs or System 7 Macs. If you have a mixture of
LaserWriter drivers on your net (7.x and 5.2), then you'll have to endure
constant reintialization of your printer every time a print job comes
to the printer from a different driver. It's mostly an annoyance, but
COULD have some major implications if you deal with a lot of downloaded
fonts. Every time the printer is reinitialized, those "soft" fonts are
cleared from the printer's memory. So all Macs that are on your network
(or could be attached to your network) should maintain the same printer
drivers.
I don't think it matters if some are 7.0 drivers and others are 7.1.1
drivers, just as long as they're all at the same basic level of 7.x.
There aren't any problems that I'm aware of as far as reinitialization
like there is with the 5.2/7.x mixture of drivers.
Hope this clears things up! :-)

happened to me an hour ago in front of a hundred students. It seems
to me there should be an error message along the lines of: "Sorry
but this image was compressed with a later version of QuickTime than
the one you are using," but then than would have required Apple to
know in advance that it was going to create an incompatible version.
Which is the real problem. Anyway, if you switch systems often
and your images start coming up blank, check your QuickTime version.

The answer to your question is simple (:-) : get from
ftp.apple.com the file /dts/mac/hacks/oscar.hqx [331K]
In it you'll find a INIT called "DeskTop Mgr". Put it in
your friend's System 6 Folder, reboot under Sys 6, Voila...
Now both Sys 6 and Sys 7 use the Sys 7 type of desktop files

>Also, is a RAM disk the same as Virtual Memory? What is
>Virtual Memory, and why do some Macs seem to have references to
>it (like the IIvx) and not others?
First, let's start with the second (paragraph, that is).
Virtual Memory and a RAM disk are NOT the same....in fact, they're
practically OPPOSITES of each other. Let me explain....
A RAM disk allows you to allocate a portion of your RAM memory to act
like an additional disk drive. Why, you might ask? Many programs
frequently need to get instructions from the application itself, or
one of many support files (dictionaries, thesaurus, etc.). Some people
like to create a RAM disk and copy their programs/support files to it
(I've heard where there's people that like to copy the System Folder to
a RAM disk). When the program needs to access instructions, they can do
it more rapidly (at the speed of electrons in the RAM chips) rather than
the slower mechanical process of reading the info from disk. This is
especially nice for PowerBook users, since disk access saps battery power.
So, theoretically, you could conserve the amount of charge in your battery
by setting up a RAM disk.
Virtual memory, on the other hand, does the opposite --- it allows you
to designate a portion of your hard drive space to act as RAM memory.
This is for people that don't have enough installed RAM to accomadate
the programs and files that they need to have open. Like I said before,
since disk access is slower than RAM access, using virtual memory degrades
your performance. I ran some benchmarks on a IIsi that one of my users
was trying to decide if the SPEED issue or the AMOUNT OF MEMORY issue
was more important. I used Snooper as my benchmarking tool, and it
indicated that performance was degraded an average of about 25% using
virtual memory (ranged from 8% to almost 40% for various subsystems).
There are a number of shareware RAM disk programs, including but not
limited to:

These textures (281 textures total) were created for use with Desktop
Textures 2.0, Aldus SuperPaint 3.0, Aldus Gallery Effects: Classic Art 1.0,
and ResEdit 2.1.1.
If you really like any of these patterns and use them on a regular basis,
please send $10 to: Joel Kruse, 1203 4th Ave. S., Moorhead, MN 56560. This
is not a requirement, but any money I get would go towards the Joel Trying
to Earn Enough Money to Buy PhotoShop Fund so that I can make better
patterns for everybody! Hope you have fun with these!

Does anyone have or know where I can get a copy of
both the old and new NASA logos ?? I need to use
them for a high school science project for under-
priveledged students.
Thanks
